Series 4 of record group 71-12 consists of reports of topographical and geological surveys (1845-1848). These are mainly handwritten copies of narrative descriptions, minutes, and accompanying notes of surveys. These are from surveys performed in various areas of the state by William A. Burt, John Burt, Bela Hubbard, and Douglass Houghton. Also includes: tabular description of geological specimens collected by William Austin Burt in his survey executed in 1848; and general memorandum and index to my journal, Hubbard & Ives survey, 1846.

The Michigan Geological Survey was created by Public Act 20 of 1837. Its purpose was to conduct a geological and mineralogical survey of the state. Born in Hamilton, New York on April 23, 1814, Bela Hubbard was the son of Thomas H. Hubbard. He came to Detroit in 1835. Bela Hubbard married Sarah E. Baughman of Adrian, Michigan on March 2, 1848. After his admission to the Michigan Bar in 1842, Hubbard practiced law for a time with Charles Collins, but he soon gave up the law to devote his time to real estate.
